Grez-sur-Loing revisited

475 kr
The art and the anecdotes from the Scandinavian artists' colony in Grez-sur-Loing have been the subject of many publications in Sweden since the heyday of the colony in the early 1880s, and are now a renowned part of Swedish art history, to a great extent going beyond the academic discipline. Less known in Sweden are the names and works of the American, English and Scottish colonists who lived and worked in Grez concurrently.

The international artists' colony at Grez has, until now, been viewd separetely along national or linguistic lines. This thesis examines an actor-network in Swedish art history that has, partly unintentionally, established a and consolidated a commonly accepted notion of the artists colony in Grez-sur-Loing, its art and its internationality. Following historiographic traces, this notion originates in the depictions of an early association of artists and writers who have created th eswedish picture of the international artist's colony i Grez until today.
