Harrry Martinson Amidst the Painters. Pen, Easel, Palette.
(Text in Swedish)
The author Harry Martinson, born in 1904, preferred to socialize with painters rather than with writing colleagues. He was especially close to the artists Sven X-et Erixson, Bror Hjort, Ragnar Sandberg and particularly the vulnerable Inge Schiöler, all significant painters and friends of Martinson. It was with these persons Martinson thought he shared a common language and they came to cooperate in different ways with stage designs, book covers and illustrations. His interest in colour – sometimes bordering to “colour intoxication', all things visual, as well as his pictorial romance was met with sympathy in this circle of painters.
In this elegant and broad representation – history of literature, art and culture all in one – Ingvar Holm moves across several decades of the 20th century. The reader comes close, not only to Martinson, but to X-et Erixson, Bror Hjort, Ragnar Sandberg and Inge Schiöler as well. We learn that Harry Martinson – Nobel laureate in literature and one of the most appreciated Swedish Author of the last century – also was a pictorial artist.
