Cleopatra Becomes Ariadne. Identity and Change
(Text in Swedish)
Cleopatra becomes Ariadne is a history rich on art and ideas. The reader is taken on a comprehensive and stimulating journey through several decades of Western culture. One of art history's great icons is in focus: Ariadne, in the shape of an antique marble sculpture, since the 16th century a part of the imposing art collection of the Vatican. It shows Ariadne peacefully sleeping on the stony ground, but for hundreds of years this was thought to be a picture of Cleopatra, the dying Egyptian queen. The book also tells the story about the Ariadne figure in modern art, especially in Giorgio Chirico's work and landing with an important contemporary Swedish artist – Ulrik Samuelsson.
Cleopatra becomes Ariadne is lavishly illustrated throughout with pictures in colour and b/w.
