Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde - A Total Artwork
When Prince Eugen (1865–1947) bequeathed Waldemarsudde to the Swedish state in 1947, one of the main conditions was that the beautiful total artwork should be administered as a vital cultural image. Today, Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, with around 440,000 visitors yearly, is one of Sweden’s most visited art museums.
In this publication, the unique total artwork Waldemarsudde is presented in all its colourful spectra. Photographer Yanan Li has, for quite some years and throughout the seasons, dedicated himself to capturing the special character and ambiance of the place. The result takes us on an exciting journey through the art collections, architecture and interiors to the sculptures in the beautiful gardens – from an oasis of untouched nature and flourishing flowerbeds to the extensive activities of today.
The book describes the coherence of nature, art and culture, of history, innovation and the future which makes Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde a unique as well as an exceptional place for all senses. In fourteen well-informed chapters written by Museum Director and Director General Karin Sidén and Museum Archivist and Librarian Anna Meister, the exciting history of Waldemarsudde, its philosophy, its present and future prospects, are presented.
